You don’t know how to say no.

Many are guilty of this. You don’t know how to say no when in fact you can’t handle it anymore. What’s more important to you is that you don’t lose face and you won’t let others down.

For example, you are a web design startup with only 6 employees. You are currently packed with projects but still manageable. But here comes along a new client asking you for your services and is giving you a very tight deadline.

You want to accept because this is a new client. More clients mean more profit. However, can your small startup keep up with the work? Sure, you won’t let the new client down if you accept it. But you are letting your staff down because they will be overworked. They will be stressed and lose their focus on their current projects.

You can accept it if you will outsource it to a third party, or hire a new staff. But if you are not willing to do so, say no.

 

You are Mr. Perfect.

How many times did you tell your staff to revise this and that? Maybe a bazillion times?

Some business owners think that being a perfectionist is always good for their business since when you are perfectionist, you are closer to achieving excellence. Well maybe, but not always.

According to this Entrepreneur article of Lisa Evans, perfection can ruin your business since perfectionists avoid taking risks, they are inflexible, and they take too long to get things done.

If your staff submits a report that lacks a comma, a period, or a minor misspelling, don’t bother with it too much. You’ll only lessen your productivity and you’ll be stressed over a small thing.

 

You do several things at once.

While others think that multitasking is a great quality, it actually lowers your work quality and efficiency. Based on this Inc. article of Larry Kim, “our brains are designed to focus on one thing at a time, and bombarding them with information only slows them down.”

So if you have several tasks to do in a day, focus finishing one task first. Avoid switching from task to task. Say you will be answering client emails, calling clients, sending reports, etc.

Do them one at a time. Finish answering client emails first. Once done, call your clients. And then send reports.

 

You act like a lone wolf.

Unless you don’t have employees, don’t act like a lone wolf. Don’t do everything by yourself. Delegate the tasks that you shouldn’t be doing as a business owner to your employees. You can even delegate the things you hate doing without feeling guilty about it because you’re the boss. Well, as long as you delegate the tasks to the right people.

In our first podcast episode, we emphasised about delegation. The reason why you hire employees is to help you achieve your business goals, right? But if you, the business owner, doesn’t entrust them with important tasks, you’ll just be burning yourself out.

 

You tend to give up easily.

How many business startups that you have built but ended up closing them? I know that you have great ideas which inspired you to build a startup. But did you really take them seriously? Or you just closed it after 6 months or 1 year because it didn’t show any progress?

It’s okay to quit or let something go if you have done everything you could. But did you really do everything you can? If it feels like you can’t do it alone, it is never wrong to ask for help. You could hire a business coach to help you get through the tough times.
